Celeste watched the yellow lines drift under the car as it sped along the highway. Hours have passed since she and CJ left Miami in a hurry. She still felt a bit ashamed for panicking over the impending hurricane. There was no anxiety now as their home remained hundreds of miles behind them. The music droned on from the radio and Celeste fought against the highway hypnosis threatening to put her to sleep.
“And that does it for North Carolina. Hello Virginia!”
CJ exclaimed triumphantly, snapping Celeste from her daze. She blinked to wet her dry eyes before glancing over toward him.
“When are we going to stop CJ? It won't be long before nightfall and we aren't going to make Boston.”
“Don't worry, I plan on stopping at the first hotel we come to once it goes dark.”
“Ok good. I'm tired…and hungry.”
CJ rolled his eyes. “I've been driving since we left several hours ago. Come to think of it, I'm hungry too. You packed canned food…unnecessarily…but since it'll improve our time if we eat on the go, grab me a can of Spaghettios.”
Celeste nodded and unbuckled her belt. She turned over and leaned through the front seat to the back seat. Her butt knocked against CJ's shoulder. “Hey, careful. I can only keep my eyes on one spectacular view at a time.”
She shook her head while rummaging through the bags piled high in the backseat. A few minutes later, success!
“Alright. Here you go. And a ravioli for me.” Celeste proudly handed him his can of Spaghettios, then plopped back down in her own seat. CJ held up his can and glanced over to his girlfriend.
“Um, can opener…”
Celeste blinked. Her eyes locked with his for a brief second while her cheeks flushed.
“You packed all the canned goods…but forgot the can opener?”
A moment of silence passed between them.
“I was in a panic okay?! And someone wanted me to come to bed.”
CJ set his can down between his legs and sighed, trying to not laugh.
“Oh look, mine has one of those nifty pull tabs!”
“Are you kidding me?!” CJ slammed the back of his head into the headrest. He dared to shoot a narrow-eyed glance at his hapless girlfriend. He watched as she pulled the tab to open her ravioli. “I don't suppose you'll share?”
“Touch my ravioli and I'll shank you.” She said sweetly while holding up a spoon she also gathered from the backseat. CJ looked over at her with a pout. “Oh fine.” Celeste smiled and plucked a ravioli from the can. CJ opened his mouth for her to pop it in there. Some sauce splashed on the corner of his mouth. She laughed as he chewed.
Dusk turned to night. Celeste looked around at the blackness surrounding the highway. CJ kept his eyes on the road where the headlights shone.
“I'm going to pull off at the next exit that has a lodging sign. I'm beat.”
“Me too. I'm so relieved we got out of there before things got worse. I'm still worried about what will happen to our apartment building, but I'm glad you rescued me.”
Celeste leaned her head against his shoulder affectionately. She was obviously exaggerating a bit. CJ smirked.
“You are welcome. Of all the hot chicks I could have saved, I chose you.”
“Jerk.”
She slapped his arm as she sat upright. CJ took the exit that came up. Soon the parked outside a motel. It wasn't fancy by any means. They couldn't be choosy though. After getting the key to their room, CJ and Celeste warily walked down the sidewalk to the door.
“Can't wait to get some rest.” CJ said. Celeste nodded in agreement while holding two duffle bags and her purse. The door creaked open and they walked inside. The room was small. A full size bed, nightstand, and small desk with and arm chair on the other side of the room made up the only furniture. She could see the flower-patterned shower curtain through the bathroom door, which swayed halfway open. The yellow tile, the matted carpet, and the velvet drapes all screamed of decades of torment. CJ shuffled to the bed and fell face first into it. The springs groaned.
“I wish we had more money.” Celeste groaned much like the mattress in protest. This was a far cry from the extravagance WL springs for once in a while.
“I do too, Celeste. Maybe once we become champions somewhere? But hey, we can make the most of it. There is no storm here. It is a pretty nice night. And I did get us out of harms way.”
Celeste let the bags and purse collapse off her shoulders. She ran to him and hopped onto the bed. Her arms swung around his neck as she gave him a kiss.
“My hero. Seriously though CJ, I was too scared. You put up with me. Kept me calm…at least a little. You do so much for me…”
“Well hey, what are boyfriends for?”
Celeste didn't answer his mostly rhetorical question. She rushed out of the room and outside. CJ stood up while scratching the back of his head. A moment later, his girlfriend burst into the room with an arm-full of stuff from the car.
“Celeste…what are you doing?”
She gave him a big smile while starting to set candles around the room. A couple on the nightstand. A few more along the window sill. The last two went into the bathroom. Then she pulled out a blue tooth speaker from her duffle bag that she brought in when they first arrived. Setting that upon the nightstand caused Conner to raise a brow.
“What's all this for? I mean the main light has a dimmer switch, see?”
He pointed to the wall, but his girlfriend refused to notice. She began lighting the candles one by one.
“Oh okay. I get it. You want a romantic night of cuddling.”
CJ chuckled…but a part of him wept inside. He'd need a cold shower tonight after this. Celeste finished. She kicked off her shoes, then tossed off her shirt. CJ had gone through this hundreds of times in the past seven months they've been dating.
It never got old.
He removed his own shirt, stripping all the way down to his boxers, being glad to have the road-worn clothes off his body. When he looked back at his girlfriend, she was topless…
“I see we are going all out on the cuddling tonight. Not that I'm complaining Celeste. Um…Celeste? What are you—”
Her panties were off while he talked. CJ grunted in shock as she pulled him against her. Celeste wrapped her arms around him and her voice shook a bit as she spoke.
“Today made me realize something CJ. If we didn't leave, we could have died. The hurricane might have killed us. I couldn't shake this thought from my head and it made me realize how much I value things. How much I value you. You're all I really have and I can't ever lose you. We need…I need…I need to do this. I want to do this.”
“Do what? OOF!”
Celeste shoved him onto the bed. CJ looked up at her with wide eyes. He dared not ask if she was sure. Fuck that. Celeste quickly picked up her phone and climbed onto the bed.
“I thought a lot about this. This moment. I want it to be perfect as it can be. Hence the candles. And I even have a song.”
“A song? We don't have a-“
Before he could finish his sentence, Celeste's lips were on his. Her leg moved over his waist so she could slide into his lap. The kiss broke. Celeste smirked and hit a button on her phone. The speaker began to blare…
‘Who let the dog's out?! Woof, woof, woof, woof.’
“You wanted to lose your virginity to this?”
“Ugh! NO!”
Celeste tapped her phone and the song cut out immediately. CJ laughed.
“No laughing. This is going to be romantic.”
She tapped another button on her phone. The beginning of Phil Collins' “In the Air Tonight” started to play. Satisfied, Celeste set her phone down. She rolled onto the bed and tugged for CJ to follow. He looked down into her bright blue eyes. She stared back up at him.
“Okay. I'm ready.”
His boxers came off. Celeste held onto his shoulders. CJ couldn't believe the moment had arrived. Finally. And so unexpectedly. He was careful at first.
Celeste watched the shadows cast from the candle's light dance along the walls. The song played through its slow beats. She gasped. She thought she heard him ask if she was okay, but a groan from him was all that caught her attention.
She laid there. Soaking in the moment. It felt good. Her expectations seemed to almost be met. She moaned as well. The feelings grew. Climbing, climbing, climbing and then…
“Uh CJ?”
The next thing she knew, the feeling was gone. CJ sat back, breathing hard. Celeste looked over to him. He looked apologetically back.
“Uh, sorry…it's just…you caught me off guard with this.”
“The song isn't even over!”
Celeste sat up and snatched her phone up into her hand. She stopped the song just as it got to the awesome drum part. CJ looked at her with a small smile.
“Hey, that was just the warm up.”
“You're damn right about that. I'm going to set this song on repeat and we are going to do this as close to the way I envisioned it, got it?!”
“Got it.”
“Now love me properly dammit.”
Celeste pushed play. The song started back up. She threw herself back down onto the bed. Her strong hands yanked him back on top of her. The rest, as they say, is history...
“And that does it for North Carolina. Hello Virginia!”
CJ exclaimed triumphantly, snapping Celeste from her daze. She blinked to wet her dry eyes before glancing over toward him.
