Matt checked his phone, noting that it was already seven passed seven. She was already late, and he wasn’t a fan of waiting at all, but yet here he sat, a glass of water in front of him and a half eaten biscuit resting on a little plate. Someone had asked him to dinner to discuss his career, a topic he was always excited about addressing, and she was pretty cute on top of that so he had agreed. Never did he think that she, or anyone for that matter, would dare to make him wait and the thought of just leaving crossed his mind, but finding people to talk to in general was becoming harder and harder the longer he remained a free agent, so this might just have to become the new normal, as depressing a thought as that was to him.
She always made it a point to arrive late for anything. Insisting that she ran on her own time and schedule rather than the one of someone else. She was worth the wait, that was a firm belief in the mind of Veronica, and it was that same belief she carried with her as she arrived. She took a few moments to look around, spotting Matt almost instantly even though he had yet to notice her arrival, but choosing to take her time before making her way to where he was sitting. Each step she takes deliberate and with a purpose, running one hand through her golden blonde hair quickly before she reaches out to place a hand on his shoulder. “There he is.”
Matt looked up, feeling the touch on his shoulder and seeing the woman he had been waiting for standing before him. “Here I am...on time and everything.” He just has to get that little jab in as he stands up to pull out her chair like any gentleman would do. He would also do that, apparently, more than likely for some sinister reasons. “Traffic keep you, or are you one of those people that has to spend hours getting ready?”
“Oh no, traffic was a breeze.” Veronica shrugs her shoulders casually before she accepts his grand gesture and takes her seat at the table. “I just left the house a little later than I should have, you know how it is.”
Matt pondered that for a second as he made his way back across the table and sat down as well. “Well yes, I know how it is, I’m a very busy man ...but I can’t say that I’m too familiar with what would keep you so busy.”
“Who said that I had a reason?” She raises one eyebrow slightly, the corners of her mouth tugging upwards into a slight smirk clearly amused with herself. “I was simply helping to build the anticipation to this dinner since it’s a special reunion for us.”
“I see.” Matt grabbed his glass and took a sip of the water, almost studying her as he did. “Well your knack for the theatrics wasn’t lost on me, Veronica. Though in future if you could leave the house a few minutes earlier, perhaps we could get to discussing the good ol’ days a little sooner.”
“I’ll think about it.” She’s quick to respond in an almost playful manner before she shakes her head a little bit. “My father does still ask about you from time to time, one of his best students as he enjoys reminding me.”
“One of?” Matt asks, almost as quickly as she had brought it up. “I’ve never been thought of as one of the best anything, I am simply the best.” He finished his sentence with a nod, as if he was just stating a fact. “Your father above all should realize that.”
“I chose my wording on purpose knowing that would get a rise out of you.” Veronica shrugs her shoulders a little bit before leaning back in her seat, watching as the waiter brings her a glass of water as well now that she’s arrived. “I trust that you’ve been on the road towards much success with that attitude.”
“You trust?” He asked, also getting annoyed at those words that she used. “You say that like you haven’t been following my career. I’m sure you’ve been keeping a close eye on me all these years just like you did at your father’s school, watching me learning my craft. Don’t think I didn’t notice you.”
“Oh really?” Veronica leaned in slightly, her eyes widening as she appears to be quite interested in the topic at hand. “And what is it that you noticed exactly?”
“Well it really is quite obvious, don’t you think?” He asks, leaning in as well and practically whispering to her as if this was the most secretive conversation in the building. “You’re into me.”
“Oh Matt…” Veronica smirks a little bit as she reaches for her glass of water and takes a quick drink before setting it back down on the table. “I can’t imagine why you would think such a thing.”
Matt seemed almost surprised at this reply, but hid it well enough, leaning back in his chair now. “Well you asked me to this dinner, you’ve been following my career literally since day one and you haven’t taken your eyes off me since you got here. If that’s not it, what is it?”
“I am my father’s daughter after all..” Veronica traces her index finger along the side of her glass of water as she keeps her eyes focused directly on Matt. “I recognize great talent and I want to mold it into something even better.”
“Mold it?” He questions, looking himself over before glancing back up at Veronica. “Don’t tell me you want to be an agent, we have enough of those already…”
“I’m sure you’ve had more than enough when it comes to dealing with an agent.” Veronica raises one eyebrow with a smirk. “No, you know I love being in the ring too much.”
“Right, so I’m not sure what you mean when you say molding me. It’s not like you’re in a position to train me in the ring Veronica, I’ve been doing this longer than you have.”
“I never said anything about training you either.” Veronica shakes her head, still clearly amused judging by the expression on her face. “I was thinking more along the lines of a tag team.”
“A tag team? Who? You and me?” Matt questions, raising an eyebrow. “You want to form a tag team with the best singles wrestler on the planet? How come?”
Veronica places her hands on the table right in front of her as she gives Matt a smile. “It’s simple really, you’ve already proven that you are the best singles wrestler, so why wouldn’t you want to conquer the world of tag team wrestling next?”
He pauses for a second, liking how that praise sounded. “Well that is true...but even if I concede that the world of tag team wrestling could make for an exciting venture, why would I want to go in with you? What sets you apart from everyone else?”
“You said it yourself, right? I’ve been keeping track of your career, watching you since the beginning, so who knows you better than I do…” Veronica allows for her words to linger for a moment as she taps her index finger against the table. “Who else understands you the way that I do?”
“I did say that, but knowing me doesn’t mean that you’re on my level, it just means you know what level I’m on. There’s a bit of a difference there, Veronica. So go on.” He leans back, clasping his hands together, ready for a show. “Wow me, why should I, the great Matt Stone, team up with you?”
“Because I know you want to be the best at everything… and who else is sitting there across from you wanting to gift you with such an opportunity?” Veronica raises one eyebrow to further emphasis the importance of her question. “It’s a win-win for both of us.”
“Is it?” Matt questioned, thinking about her proposition. It was intriguing, that was for sure, tag team wrestling wasn’t something he ever considered, but maybe that was his bad. “If we are going to do this, we’re going to do it my way.”
“Your way?” Veronica resists the urge to roll her eyes before she simply shakes her head. She had expected this kind of response from Matt, but it was still amusing to see it play out right there in front of her with a cocky smirk on his face. “I believe you need to understand that rule one about tag team wrestling is that it becomes OUR way.”
“Is that rule one?” He asks, shaking his head. “I would have thought that rule one would have been that we work as a team. And, in order to work as a team, you should always follow the lead of the more experienced competitor, and we both know who that is, right?” As he spoke, he began puffing out his chest like he was waiting for her to say his name.
Veronica is fully aware of what Matt is waiting for, but instead she chooses to answer in her own way, keeping a serious expression on her face. “The one who’s paying for dinner here tonight?”
“Why is it that when we figure out that I’m the better leader, you still have to get your little jab in?” He asked, shaking his head. “If you want to be on the same team as me, you should probably start respecting me like a follower would a great leader.”
“We’re starting a tag team, not a cult.” Veronica laughs as she picks up her glass of water to take another drink. “You appear to have forgotten just where you learned how to be the best.”
“I haven’t, but you weren’t the one training me Ronnie, that was your father. I haven’t seen you truly in the ring before, so why should I trust that you can do half of what I can do, let alone match me move for move?”
“I am my father’s daughter.” Veronica repeats her previous statement as she shrugs her shoulders in an effort to keep things casual. She was aware of the fact there was more for her to prove than there was for Matt, but still, she wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip from her fingers. “If you want us to do a sparring session to prove myself beforehand, just name the day.”
Matt looked her over for a moment, a smirk on his face. “I mean, I’m good to go now. I keep myself in wrestling ready condition each and every day because you never know what opportunities will come your way.” He states, knowing she’d be hard pressed to do anything athletic in her current outfit.
“We both know that there’s no way I’m going to be able to accomplish much of anything in this dress or these heels.” Veronica rolls her eyes as she waves her index finger back and forth right there in front of Matt’s face. “Although I could always take the heels off, but that’s besides the point, I didn’t dress up to get in the ring here tonight.”
“Then that begs the question, why did you dress up? Did you think that showing a little leg and cleavage would make me more receptive to your suggestion? Cause if so, you might not know me as well as you think you do.”
"Oh please, I didn't dress up for you." Veronica makes eye contact with the waiter as she is speaking, giving him a dazzling smile, at least until she focuses her attention back on Matt. "I dressed up for myself."
“Whatever floats your boat.” He sarcastically quipped. “Alright then, we’ll try this out, but I’m not committing to anything long term until I’ve seen what you can do. Understand?”
"I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Matt." She is quick to respond despite knowing the fact that this still meant she had gotten exactly what she wanted in the end.
“Well good.” He said, sounding triumphant despite not being thrilled about the idea in the first place. He picks up his water, holding it out to Veronica. “To teamwork.”
Veronica picks up her own glass of water and taps it up against Matt’s in a showing of unity in regards to this new beginning where their relationship was concerned. “To teamwork.”
